Department of Oncology

Department of Oncology

Due to a spurt in the number of cancer patients and lack of medical facilities in the region, CAPITOL has a multidisciplinary treatment and rehabilitation center which offers various services, from screening and early detection to the possible cure of most deadly diseases.

The Department of Oncology has five wings

(a). Radiation Oncology

The Radiation Oncology Department provides state-of-the-art radiation treatment to cancer patients with high precision and other exclusive features such as 6-D couch rotation for better positioning, and respiratory gating. The department is well equipped with an advanced linear accelerator TrueBeam with a 6MV, 9MV, 12MV, and 15MV photon energy and electron facility. This machine has the capability of delivering a wide array of treatment techniques like 3-DCRT, IMRT, IGRT, and RapidArc. The machine has high definition multileaf collimators, a CT simulator, treatment planning computers, and mould room facilities to precisely and accurately treat the cancer cells. We have a 24-channel High-dose-rate remote after loading brachytherapy machine for internal radiation treatment. All oncological patients are discussed in the multidisciplinary tumor board to make a unanimous decision. The hospital is running hospital-based cancer registry program by ICMR and a Post-graduate teaching programme-DNB Radiation Oncology.

(b). Medical Oncology

The Department has highly qualified and experienced Medical Oncologists. Treatments such as Chemotherapy, Hormone therapy, Targeted therapy and Immuno therapy are being provided to patients, strictly adhering to national / international safety guidelines.

(c). Surgical Oncology

The Department has a team of Surgical Oncologists, consultants in sub-specialities and clinical assistants who provide respective expertise to patients.

(d). Onco-Radiology

The Onco-Radiology team provides minimally-invasive treatments, carries procedures to manage pain and complications, performs biopsies, and strives to alleviate a variety of symptoms that can occur during cancer treatment. The Department performs a vital role in the management of metastatic disease from cancers such as colorectal, breast, gallbladder, pancreas, lung, esophageal, stomach, melanoma and sarcomas. Common interventional radiology proceduresinclude:

  • Liver-directed therapies Transarterial chemoembolization for treatment of liver tumors and Radiofrequency ablation for treatment of isolated single metastasis.
  • Pancreatico-Biliary cancers Percutaneous biliary drainage (PTBD) catheter placement and percutaneous biliary stents for inoperable cancers.
  • Vascular intervention The minimally invasive techniques to place stents, stop bleeding and block the flow of blood to or from tumor tissue to support chemotherapy and radiation therapy response.
(e). Onco-Pathology

The Department has latest tumor markers to detect the presence of certain types of cancer in the body, monitor the progress of cancer treatment, evaluate the need for surgical interventionor assess the development of recurrence. Some of the common tumor-markers are CA15-3 (for breast cancer), CA19-9 (for gastrointestinal tumors), CA-125 (for ovarian cancers), PSA (for prostate cancers) and CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen).
